European Olympics. 2ND Transnational Learning Activity

Bombarral. Portugal. April 16-20, 2018

From April 16 to 20, 2018, we developed our second Transnational Learning Activity in Bombarral, Portugal. Parents, teachers and students of the Agrupamento de Escolas Fernando do Po welcomed us warmly and gave us the opportunity to live unforgettable experiences.

April 16, 2018

The activities started early in the morning. We went from the school to the City Council of the town, where the teams of teachers and students from Slovenia, Bulgaria and Spain were received by the Mayor and his team.

After the visit to the City Hall, we returned to the school where the teachers had prepared different team games that gave the opportunity to newcomers from different countries and Portuguese students to start getting to know each other better.

The school has extraordinary facilities and also a physical education training module, so that at all times we counted with the help of the students of the school for the development of different activities.

After them, and as we specified in our project, students from each country made presentations about the host country. In them, they mentioned the topics about the country where they already were. An evaluation at the end of the visit would assess to what extent such topics are true or not.

The day ended with a convivial dinner between parents, teachers and students. We all had the opportunity to taste the delicious and typical dishes that they had prepared.

We took the bus to go to Sao Martinho do Porto, where we made a 12 km route by the sea. The landscape was astonishing, the good weather accompanied us on this day in which our students enjoyed the beauty of the Atlantic, the company of their friends from other countries and the sun.

After the route through this beautiful landscape we went to the town of Óvidos, where we made a new route (this time shorter) through a maze of wooden paths next to the Foz de Arelho Lagoon.

Later, we went to Ovidos, one of the best preserved medieval towns in Portugal, where we walked among Manueline porticos, flowery windows and small squares.

The teachers of Agrupamento de Escolas Fernando do Po organized the First Olympic Day between schools. They counted on the participation of other Portuguese High Schools and, of course, with the students of the associated schools in our European Olympics project. The act began with an opening ceremony in which we enjoyed different dances and skating exhibitions.

We also witnessed the lighting of the Olympic torch and the official opening of the First Olympic School Games in Portugal by the President of the Olympic Committee of Portugal, Mr. José Manuel Constantino. The mayor of Bombarral Mr. Ricardo Fernandes and the head master of the school Mr. Emanuel Vilaça also participated in the opening ceremony.

The students participated in different sports competitions. These were Badminton, Table Tennis, Athletics, Rugby, Basketball and Golf. The teams were established according to the sports preferences of the students. All teams included participants from all partner countries. In all developed competitions, fair play, help between different teams, friendship and a sense of humour prevailed.

It was a true Olympic day in which our students learned and enjoyed putting into practice many of the principles we had highlighted in our project: healthy living, solidarity, as well as the Olympic principles of friendship, camaraderie and respect to the contrary.

After the inauguration, we went to an auditorium where a medallist of the Rio 2016 Olympics in fencing offered us a lecture in which he highlighted the Olympic values of respect, solidarity and friendship. The students had the opportunity to hold a real torch of the Rio Olympics.

On Thursday, April 19, we visited the beautiful city of Lisbon. After a stroll along the margins of the Tagus we made a guided tour in Hipotrip. A vehicle with which we toured the streets of the city that later became a boat with which we could have a different perspective of its famous monuments.

Early in the morning, the teachers held the Second Transnational Meeting of the Project in which we analysed the health survey applied to the students of the different schools and decided on the measures that we were going to put into practice to solve the problems detected. We also followed up on the project and started preparing the next Transnational Activity in Bulgaria.
